Tunings assign notes to the strings of the guitar including acoustic guitars, electric guitars and classical guitars.
Each string of the guitar has a pitch which can be tuned using a tuner or tune it manually. Tuning basically means setting other than standard pitches to the strings of the guitar.
It is done for playing some particular songs. There are a huge variety of such tunings and also variants of standard tunings.
When guitarists play in a group they tend to use the same tunings so that there is symmetry in their music. Some of the types of tunings are
- Standard tunings
- Alternative tunings
- Dropped tunings
- Open tunings
- Regular tunings
- Instrumental tunings
- Special tunings

There are basically four methods to tune in a guitar. Tuning can be done by using
An Electronic guitar tuner- It is one of the best and simple way to tune the guitar.
You have to turn on the tuner. Set the string you want to tune on the tuner. Now pluck a string, look at the tuner and turn the machine head. See which way the needle go.
If it’s going towards the middle keep repeating the action. If not, then turn the machine head in the opposite direction and try again. This has to be done with all the strings and the guitar is tuned now.
A Smartphone App- They are the cheapest way to tune the guitars as a smartphone is commonly available with everyone these days All you have to do is download the application.
There are several paid and free apps. These tune guitars with the help of a microphone. As in Electronic tuner, these apps also have a needle which will go the middle when the tune is correct.
You need to pluck the strings properly so that it can be properly heard by the microphone and give correct results.
Other instruments- It is easier to use if you have various other instruments and friends to play them. It is easier to use if another instrument is key-based one as in piano.
You have to pluck the string and check whether it is having the same sound in the other instrument.
Keep turning the machine head and plucking the string until you get the same sound. Keep doing it with all the strings and the guitar is tuned.
Guitar’s own strings- This is little difficult to do as you have to totally focus on the notes while plucking the strings.
But it is easy to go method when you don’t have an electric tuner or smartphone. To tune with this you have to keep fretting with the strings until you hear the correct note you want.
Normally the guitarist tunes the guitar when they have to play anything special. The tuning also gets disrupted by temperature effects (if it is very hot or very cold) and impacts.
Also if the strings get old they will not be tuned properly. So the strings must also be changed on a regular basis. You should always loosen up the strings if you are carrying the guitar to some other places to cope up with temperature changes.
